Basic Footwork
Footwork is all about maintaining balance and mobility in combat. Here, we'll be covering the key patterns for building your ability to do so!
Setup
We'll be utilizing a large X on the floor. Traditionally the concept is taught by placing sticks on the ground and stepping around them. I find learning is easier when using tape or chalk, so you don't have to worry about tripping.

Angled Stepping
The core of movement in Arnis and the Filipino martial arts is angular footwork, getting yourself out of the way of attack and quickly being able to change direction and position. Stand in the center of the X and slowly repeat the following, remember to keep your weight centered as you step.
The Open Triangle
- Both feet in center
- Right foot steps forward to front Right corner
- Back to center
- Left foot steps forward to front Left corner
- Back to center
The Closed Triangle
- Both feet in center
- Right foot steps backward to back Right corner
- Back to center
- Left foot steps backward to back Left corner
- Back to center

Once comfortable, we'll try quickly switching the feet. As you shift your weight to the center, hop slightly to quickly replace the back foot and transition into the next step.
