(ELF DRAFT) Modern Day Tondo Slums, Manila Group of 5 masked hoodlums are running through the slums at night, chasing someone, they have weapons. the person being chased in unarmed. the person running away is cornered in an empty allyway. he hoods beat on him, yell something about debts. One of the hoodlums is noticebly reluctant to beat on the man, he's new, this is our main character. The leader of the hoods notices, the hoods make room to allow MC to deliver the final blow. Mc does so with fear on his face and tears in his eyes. Hard cut MC is stone-faced with trauma. The hoods are assembled in front of a well dressed man, "slums rich" but not actually wealthy. He is paying each of them for their work tonight, giving praise. the hoods are happy, MC is too traumatized to react. The hoods go out drinking, bragging about toughness and bravery and skill. MC knows this "job" took none of that, but he tries to believe them and drinks. He goes back to his home, he's made enough to pay a doctor to treat his sick sibling. his aged mother thinks he's working at the docks. she tells him she's proud of him, he finds it hard to accept the praise. he goes to sleep sad and exhausted. The next day he's out on the street with his friend. he notices something is off about him and asks. the beating weighs heavy on him. friend empathize but their discussion concludes it's what they have to do to survive. MC does not feel better. the friend wants to cheer MC up, he grab various sticks and invite MC to practice. MC smiles. the two go to an open space near the docks, one of them borrows a smartphone from the internet cafe, puts on youtube video titled "Kali Advanced Drills", the video features a white american training with other white americans. the boys follow along well and eventually start sparring. MC has more of an aptitude for it than the friend, training is his favorite thing. The skills taught however are not quite authentic. A boat arrives at the docks, an older grizzled man with a rucksack limps off the boat, he's a wandering vagrant, survives by working day labor, and he's hungry. He wanders around looking for work but nobody is hiring, then spots the boys. He approaches and asks if they are Eskrimadors, the boys are confused, they call this Kali. The boys also make fun of his cebuano accent. the older man scoffs, no real eskrimador calls the art "Kali", only foreigners call it that. The boys get defensive, what would an old man know? He puts his rucksack down and pulls out a kamagong stick with several notches cut into it, and a wad of cash. A challenge, the boys pull out cash too to match his. "come at me", the friend approaches first and throws a flurry of attacks, the old man's defences are quick as lightning and solid as iron. The friend is quickly disarmed and beaten down. MC is the next to approach. MC's techniques are unrefined but are quick to react and defend, he's putting up much more of a fight. The old man is still better and defeats MC. The old man picks up the money and leaves, as he goes he says he'll give them another "lesson" whenever they want, waving the money in the air. The boys are on the job again, MC cant stop thinking about the old man's technique. The boys along with others are sent to rough up a local business that hasn't been paying protection money. The business has hired some muscle to defend themselves. A fight breaks out in the street. knives, fists, and clubs are all thrown at eachother. During the brawl, MC tries to do one of the old man's techniques but his execution is off, pays for it by getting struck. After a brutal fight, MC and his friend are chased away and beaten into the dirt. MC sees this as karma. they get chewed out by their boss and are not paid. MC lies, tells his mother that he got attacked on his way from work. She worries, suggests he take up boxing. MC gets an idea. Next day, MC finds the old man walking the streets. Asks to learn Kali from him. "its Eskrima, and no". MC keeps asking, following him into a sabong (cock fighting) club. MC suggests a wager, if a chosen rooster dies then the old man must become his teacher. The man wants MC to bet money too, he does so. The rooster dies and MC is out of cash. The next day MC finds him again and asks him the same question, the man refuses, MC pulls out his own club and chides the man for being a coward, the man swiftly disarms MC and sends the weapon flying, the man walks away, MC is stunned. Montage of MC visiting the old man day after day, each time being refused and being disarmed/thrown to the ground. On the final day MC knows how much the man likes sabong, decides to buy a mangy rooster and call it a fighting rooster to give as a gift. The old man laughs, he says he'll take pity on MC. If this rooster wins a fight, he will train MC. It is a close fight but by some miracle, their rooster wins, and the old man splits the winning bet money with MC, "see you tomorrow". MC is ecstatic. Training has begun, MC is instructed to practice with a stick in each hand. MC questions the practicality, when in a street fight would he ever have two sticks? The teacher gives him a light smack with his stick, this is the traditional practice. the stick in the offhand trains coordination, And if you're able to pick up a second weapon in a fight, it's a benefit to be able to use two. Additionally, if you lose the ability to use your dominant hand you'll be able to fight with the offhand. Two triangles are drawn opposing each other in the dirt, forming an X. In this diagram MC is taught footwork.
